Time period the time period of Huck Finn is 1830's-1840's. you can tell that this book is in this time period because of how Huck talks in the book and how he says different words like "warn't". The language used in the book is not used in present day. This story also includes slaves like they are a normal thing, not like today.
Perspective/point of view of narrator the story is told as the perspective of Huck Finn, this influences the story by Huck is a young boy and all you get to see is his perspective on things and what he thinks about everything. Only getting too see Hucks perspective can change the emotion and what you think of the situation wether its good or bad due too the way huck takes it in. week 2 chapters 6-11
Explain Why Pap has Huck Locked Up Pap has Huck locked up because he does not like Huck going to school and getting an education yet Huck still continues to do it. Pap sees that Huck has a better life then he would give him. Pap also wants the money from Huck that the judge is holding for him. While Pap has Huck Finn locked up everytime he leaves to go get drunk he locks Huck in.
Abolitionist An abolitionist is a person who does not support institution, especially capital punishment or slavery. In this time it was "normal" to have one or more slaves and most people supported the idea. With Huck being on the island with jim people could assume that Huck is helping jim if they did find out. This would not be good for Huck therefore he is scared but is still going to help jim.
What are the several things that gave Huck away when he pretends to be a girl. 3 things that would give a boy away and 3 things that would give a girl away in our modern times
1)How Huck could throw the piece of iron at the mouse and almost hit it 2)How fidgety Huck was 3)When Huck was given a needle to tread he couldn't do it

Chapters 12-16 1) What is the story of King Solomon and his child? How does Jim interpret that story? King solomon was very wise and had very many wives, day two of his wife come too him calming that they were the mother of his child. King Solomon suggested that they cut the child in half but only to see who is the real mother. The non-mother of this baby would be accepting of this side as to the actual mother who would cry and beg for them not to cut the child in half, even giving up the child. Jim took this story as solomon being a fool and also it being more about a whole child not a half child. Jim thought that solomons solution was pointless and that if he wouldn't of had as many children he would have more respect for them.
2) When Jim wakes up after their separation in the fog, what does Jim’s reaction to Huck tell us about him? How do you feel about Jim at this point? Huck played a joke on jim that what happened the other night was a dream, for a while jim believed it but he started to catch on and sees what is going on and gets very upset with heck because he thought huck had died. I feel that jim cares a lot for jim and does not like to feel embarrassed especially by Huck who jim considers a friend. I feel badly for jim because he really thinks of Huck as a friend and didn't think that he would do that to him, also jim doesn't take a joke the way Huck would. 3) Jim is very superstitious. From a historical standpoint, why do you think this is? I think that jim is superstitious because he is very uneducated and he makes himself feel safer and make life seem a little less scary. When jim was little he made things up in his mind so they would make more since too him.
4) It was fifteen minutes before I could work myself up to go and humble myself to a nigger – but I done it, and I warn’t ever sorry for it afterwards, neither.” What does this line tell us about Huck? The Norm for "slaves" at the time was to be treated with no respect and like dirt. Huck eventually humbled himself to apologize to jim for what he had done, knowing that no one else would have done it. Huck does care for jim and he my not show it but he does.
5) At the end of chapter 16 Huck is struggling with giving Jim up. Outline the battle that he has with himself, and explain his actions when the men come up looking for the 5 escaped slaves Huck is struggling with wether to give jim up or keep him safe, with jim being one of the 5 missing slaves huck feels bad with giving jim up to the people and with keeping him safe. Turning in jim would break the bond that him and huck have started to have, it would also make Huck feel terrible on the inside. With either design that huck makes he will loose something, not turning jim in would lead to loads to trouble on Hucks part. When the men did come to search for the 5 escaped slaves huck helped jim risking getting caught. Huck told the men that on the boat his family had chicken pocks and anyone that entered would get them, so the men let huck go on his way without checking the boat.
Chapters 17-21 1)Describe the Grangerford family The Grangerford family mis "perfect" looking from the out side. Each family member has there own servant to help them with anything and do everyday things and chores for the family. There are 6 children overall counting Emmeline who is dead. The family has poems and art work about people who have died and it is very sentimental to them. Behind what seems to be the perfect family is a ongoing family feud with the Shepherdson's, which would explain why they were so hateful when they though that Huck was a Shepherdson's. The too families wish each other death.
2)Mark Twain alludes that the feud between the Grangerfords and the Shepherdsons is about traditional feuds between farmer (“granger”) and rancher (“shepherd”). Why would he write this into the novel? What does it say about these two occupations at this time(Chapter 18)? Mark Twain wrote this into the novel to show what is it like to be a farmer and a rancher trying to be the best. When buck shoots and has the intention of killing Harney Shephardson, Huck tries to understand the need for harm. Buck explains the 30 year long fued that has been going on between the families but there really is not an explanation for why the feud is happening. The Farmer (granger) and the rancher (shepherd) are two titles going against each other to prove there the best, the 2 occupations at the time (1800's) had many conflicts themselves. 3)Narrators perspective Seeing Huck's perspective really shows how much Huck was really starting to care about them and how the violence between the two families really effected him. Reading the battle through Hucks eyes made things a lot more emotional because a lot of the times Huck is not soft but as the battle went on i think it really effected him and also him stating that he does not want to talk about something shows a soft spot.
4)Explain who the King and the Duke are. Why does Huck go along with their story The King and the duke are people Huck and jim met on there raft and they ended up taking over the raft. One of the men claim that he is an impoverished English Duke, and the other says he is the long lost son of King Louis and are now being called "Duke and Your Majesty". Huck and jim easily believe the men and treat them as royalty. Buck begins to figure out that the men are lying but decides to keep that to himself so it wont mess up his planes of travel.
5)What problems do you anticipate with the Duke’s solution to how they can all run the raft during the day The problems I could see happening with the ducks solution of If the raft was caught in the daytime, they would claim that Jim was a runaway slave they had found and captured and they are returning him to his owner. If they were to get questioned someone could tell jim real owner and they would be expecting there runaway slave back, also jim may be unable to understand what he is supposed to be posing as exactly. Someone could also recognize huck in someway and they could get caught up in a very big lie and get in very big trouble if any of those things were to happen.
6)Illustrate the town that the play will be held in
Chapters 22-26 1.At the very end of chapter 22 we see the handbill that the king and the duke will pass out. The duke says “if that line don’t fetch them, I don’t know Arkansaw!” Why would the line at the bottom of the handbill work to get people into the play? The line at the end on the handbill says "LADIES AND CHILDREN ARE NOT ADMITTED" which could catch the eye of many men, those men seeing that if they were to go to the play they could get away from their families for a little take a break. Also many of the men that could attend would think there would be different scenes throughout this play, ones that are not appropriate for them women and children.
2.Towards the end of chapter 23 we see this line: “What was the use to tell Jim these warn’t real kings and dukes? It wouldn’t a done no good; and besides, it was just as I said; you couldn’t tell them from the real kind.” A.Why doesn’t Huck see the use in telling Jim? Huck didn't see the point in telling Jim because he didn't want him to feel gullible and get upset with him. Jim has also build up some trust with the "real king and the duke" and did not think that they were in fact con-men. Huck did also think that if he brought up this conversation it would end in a fight and Huck though that it would be pointless to cause something when he can just not tell him. B.What does Huck mean by “you couldn’t tell them from the real kind.”? When Huck says you can't tell them from the real kind he means that they have never met, seen, talked with a real king and a duke. They wouldn't know the difference or what they really act like. Also with Jim not having an education he is very gullible, the king and the duke are also very good at tricking people.
3.The final line in chapter 24 reads: “It was enough to make a body ashamed of the human race.” What is Huck talking about? What does it tell us (the reader) about Huck that he feel this way? The King was told that a man had died, this man was rich and they were waiting for hit two brothers to show up because everything in his will was left to them. One of the brothers was deaf. The King and the Duke took over the act of the two brothers. The Duke acted as the deaf brother. They climbed up the mountian and put on this whole show where they cried, Huck was very upset with what was happening, he clearly did not agree with it.
4.In chapter 25 we meet the doctor. How does the doctor know that the king and the duck are a fraud? The doctor knows that the king and the duke are fraud because of the accents. The doctor stating that it was one of the worst accents he had ever heard. They also did not know who peter was but if they were really related to him they would know most everything about the man himself and his life.
5.The king and the duke consider leaving in the middle of the night with the money (chapter 26). Why don’t they? The king and the Duke realized that they could make more money once the land and the and all of the slaves sell. They were going to leave with 6,000 dollars in gold but denied not to in the middle of the night.
Chapters 27-30 1.Why did people stay up with the dead during this time period? It was a form of tradition, to sit with the dead. They did not have ways to preserve the body because they didn't have funeral homes, people would also sit with the bodies to protect them from rodents getting to them before burial. A body that passed away was never alone, done out of the respect for the dead and to protect it until it was buried. Many of the close people to the dead person would be the ones who would sit with them after they had passed.
2.What do we learn about Huck when he tells Miss Mary Jane the slaves will see their family again in inside of two weeks? As the book gets further in we see how Huck is becoming more emotional and how we can see these come through. As Mrs.Marry Jane is crying because of seeing the slave family get split huck couldn't bear to this. Huck saw mrs.marry jane crying alone by the casket so knowing that she was struggling with the death Huck wanted to make her feel better. He told her that the family would not be separated from each other forever, Huck being empathetic in this section is not the first time we have seen it happen we are just getting reminded of how good of a heart he has.
3.What were the two methods the townspeople used to try to identify who the brothers were and who the frauds were? The two methods the towns people used were to preform a writing test, He had all four of the men sign a paper to compare those signatures to past letters. The test showed that the King and the Duke were frauds, the king denied that he complained to the lawyer saying it wasn't accurate since the real Harvey's hand was broken. The next method was to identify the tattoo on the mans chest, the real Harvey said that he knows of a tattoo on his brothers chest that no one else would know, saying the man who did dress the body would back him up. Both the King and Harvey give descriptions of the tattoo and the man who dressed the dead man reveals the truth that he had no tattoo on his chest.
Chapters 31-35 1.Huck says “You can’t pray a lie.” What lie is he trying to pray about? What does he mean? Jim has gotten captured taken and turned in as a run away slave. Huck wants to write to Mrs.watson to let her know where jim is but that would put huck with jim with would mean that Huck helped jim escape because In that time it was illegal and not a good thing to do to help a balck person escape their owner. This wasn't just any slave this was Jim huck began to get very close with him. Huck was wanting to pray for forgiveness about helping Jim escape but he was praying for something that he really did not want to happen so praying for a lie. This letter would also reveal that suck did fake his own death and is alive.
2.Why does Huck tear up the letter he writes? Huck made a decision to writ to tom sawyer to tell Mrs. Watson where jim is at. No matter who Huck told, or what he said in his letter both him and jim are in the wrong. Buck starts to tear up because he had gotten so close to jim and the have been through so much together. The two of them now have such a strong bond and Huck thinking about jim's good heart, there friendship and what would happen to him Huck was in tears. He ripped up the letter and made the decision and do the best he could for jim and see him from slavery.
3.Huck is disappointed that Tom would help him steal Jim. He says “Tom Sawyer fell, considerable, in my estimation. Only I couldn’t believe it. Tom Sawyer a nigger stealer!” What do you think of this? (Chapter 33) I think that suck being disappointed in tom is very hypocritical, Huck is the one who asked tom to help and huck should be thankful because he is lucky that tom is helping him. Tom is just wanting to help help huck get his close friend jim back. If Huck believes that what Tom is doing is bad and is calling him a bad person for doing it then isn't it the same for huck.
4.Huck says two things at the end of chapter 33: 1.“Human beings can be awful cruel to one another.” 2.“But that’s always the way: it don’t make no difference whether you do right or wrong, a person’s conscience ain’t got no sense, and just goes for him anyway.” What does Huck mean by these two statements? When Huck says these sentences he means people will do anything even horrible things to get to the top even if it ends up hurting someone. When suck says "But that’s always the way: it don’t make no difference whether you do right or wrong, a person’s conscience ain’t got no sense, and just goes for him anyway" he's saying that no matter what someone has done and no matter what you do your conscience always finds a way to make you feel some way. When the 2 con men are getting punished and huck sees this he still feels bad and is abel to understand that they were just trying to live but chose the wrong thing to do this is because of his conscience.
5.Why are Tom and Huck looking for a more difficult way to break Jim free? (Chapter 34) Huck came up with a simple plan to get Jim out of the shed, then Tom came up with a much more complicated unessary way. Tom decided if he was going to go through with this it had to be in style because they needed to look good.
Chapters 36-40 In the process of breaking Jim free, what is Tom’s motivation? What is Huck’s motivation? (Why are they doing it?) Tom and Huck had different had different intentions of breaking jim free. Tom wanted to be KNOWN for the break out of jim. This is why tom wanted to do so many style points to make it look good. Huck on the other hand Huck wanted to do something simple because he just wanted jim to be free, he had felt so bad that Jim had gotten caught. Huck is doing this so he can get his friend back and tom is doing this so he can have his name as someone who broke a slave to freedom.
What do Huck and Tom mean when they say they “let on” about something? Why do they do this? (Begins on chapter 37) Huck and Tom say the phrase "Let on". Every time they say that phrase they are meaning that they are pretending that certain things are happening. Huck and Tom created a rope using rope from Jim's bed sheet. At the end of the paragraph Huck states, "We let on it took nine months to make it". They most likely said this because they want their story to be crazier and more intense than it really was.
Why is Tom writing the letters and posting warnings? Why did he give instructions to his aunt and uncle’s slave? What are his motivations for this? (Chapter 39) Tom is writing the letters and posting warning because he wanted to be "famous". Tom wanted his name on as many things as he could get it on or "credit" for his work. Tom wanted this story of his to be like the stories he read.
We’ve worked a great deal on this novel’s satirical elements. How is the planning and plotting of Jim’s escape by Tom and Huck satire? This is showing satire because tom will do anything to get his name somewhere to be known. Tom wanted to make things so much more complicated just so he could sound cooler and make himself look better. We do this too, not to the extent of stealing a slave back and having ti make it look cool but we try and make our selfs better then we really are anf out our selfs through a lot more trouble juts to be "cool, more known, famous."
Towards the end of the chapter Huck says “I knowed he was white inside” about Jim. Why does he say this and what does he mean? When Huck says this he means that Jim is just like every other person even tho he is black. Jim refuses to get on the boat and risks his freedom to get Tom a doctor, no other slave would risk this for a white's well being but it shows Jims big heart. Huck said “I knowed he was white inside”it shows he knows that color doesn't make a difference of who someone is.
Chapters 41- End Towards the end of chapter 41: “And then when I went up to bed, she come up with me, and fetched her candle, and tucked me in, and mothered me so good I felt mean and like I couldn’t look her in the face”. Why does Huck feel this way? Huck feels a great amount of guilt because his is a caring empathetic person. She thinks she lost Tom, however Huck knows for sure that he is alive, Huck could look her in the face because he was scared the secrets were going to spill out. He felt like he was playing her and felt awful how worried she was because he knows what is going on, She is caring and "mothering" figure to Huck.
In chapter 42 we hear the doctor’s account of his experience treating Tom: “so I says, I got have help, somehow; and the minute I says it, out crawls this nigger from somewheres, and says he’ll help; and he done it too, and done it very well.” Can we come to an understanding about Jim from this? What do we learn about him? This shows that Jim is so loyal to Huck and Tom that he will once again risk his freedom to help save Tom. It does not even cross jim mind that everything that he just got could be taken all over again. Jim did not leave Tom's side when he was shot nursing him as much as he could with the very little education he has. Jim really just had these two boys as family so he will risk anything for them.
What do we learn about Tom from what he says when he wakes up after being treated for the gunshot wound (Chapter 42)? We learn a lot about Tom that we already know, he loves adventures so when he wakes up is brags about the amazing escape that they pulled off. He goes into very much detail about it. But we also learn that Tom is self centered and really is only concerned with having his name around the whole town. Tom knew that Jim was already to be set free and Miss Watson had passed, but he kept it to himself so he could get something out of it.
You’ve finished the novel: Tell me, in three to four sentences, what you think of Huck. Now that I have finished the novel I think that Huck is a very good person. With all the talk around him that black people should be treated like dirt and not like real human beings huck saw through that and really cared for his best friend Jim. Growing up with the abusive father he managed to make something of what he was not take what happened to him and use that as an excuse for anything. Through out this novel I saw Huck grow he is a sympathetic boy who sees the good in things and is very selfless caring for others and how they feel. Huck has such a big heart and that really made me like him.
